DH Thottama

Thottama divisional hospital is located 15 Km's from Ambalanoya junction. Ambalanoya is a small junction which is situated in between the road from Siyabalanduwa to Ampara. To be exact it's 40 km's away from Siyabalanduwa.

Currently the hospital has two medical officers. One of the main drawbacks of this hospital is the location of it. It's too far from any major city or town. Closest town is the Ambalan oya junction which is 15 Km's away. To Ampara it's 34 Km's. Regular replenishment's of food and other amenities is possible by utilizing the ambulance as it travels regularly back and forth from Ampara to Thottama. However if you want t do any other personal shopping it's bit far from anywhere. Buses are available but not at a very rapid frequency. you get a bus every half an hour or so ( Depending on the time of the day)

Biggest attraction you find along the way to Thottama DH is the Ambalanoya reservoir. This is a very large reservoir and has a very long Dam length close to 4 Km's.

DH Damana

I'm not going to repeat on the geographical location of Damana or it's attractions here again as I have already mentioned them in my previous post on Damana MOH office.

DH Damana is just walking distance from Damana MOH office.

It's located in close proximity to A25 route. From the A25 route you have to walk in about 300 meters to DH Damana. To be exact it's exactly the small concrete road which is there opposite the 42nd Km post

Walking to the hospital from the road is yet another rewarding experience. The whole road is a tree tunnel.

Hospital occupies 4 no's of doctors. Hospital got two good quarters where you get pipe borne water and electricity. Male single doctors share the quarters together. In cases where 4 doctors cannot share the available two quarters you need to find a boarding place.

DH Damana and one if it's quarters

Damana MOH Office

Damana is situated  in between Siyabalanduwa and Ampara in the A25 route. To be exact it's 42 Km's away from Siyabalanduwa and 17 Km's from Ampara. If you are travelling from Colombo the route that I advice you to take is the one that which takes you through Colombo, Ratnapura, Pelmadulla, Udawalawa, Thanamalwila, Wellawaya, Moneragala, Siyabalanduwa. The road I mentioned from Colombo all the way upto Damana is well  carpeted and is in excellent condition. However watch your speed limits as there are cops with speed guns along the way. ( If you need to know where the cops with speed guns would be just comment. I'll share that details as well)I have shown here the location of Damana in google maps in both satellite and Map views.

 Damana MOH has a very low population to look after which is only second to Lahugala MOH Office in Ampara district. Damana MOH office is extremely conveniently located just by the road side of the A25. The A25 route is the main bus route as well. It is the same route taken by Ampara-Colombo Buses. While you don't have super markets as such in Damana but you have decent grocery stores where you could purchase daily essentials. Super markets in Ampara is just a half an hour away if you go by a bus. Damana MOH Office has a recently built very good quarters which is situated just at a 2 minute walking distance from the MOH office. Quarters gets pipe borne water and electricity.

Damana MOH is known to have a very supportive and self directed staff. Damana MOH office winning one of the national productivity awards in year 2014 is a testimony to that.

Damana is in close proximity to many local attractions. You got Eggaloya reservoir about 6 Km's away from Damana towards Siyabalanduwa.

Then you have Govindahela, a historical place with a Buddhist monastery offering you with a breath taking view of entire east.

In Damana while you can always bath at the comfort of your bathroom, you have Alahena tank just behind the MOH Office. It's again about three minute walking distance from the MOH Office. It's safe to swim and bathe in it except in rainy season. Always consulting a local villager before you enter any water for the first time is very advisable.

What is so special about North & East Appointments?

Most of you who is visiting this blog must have completed your hard internship period. Well first and foremost congratulations !!! You are on your way to become a full pledged Medical professional.

Next step post intern appointments. Based on your merit you will be provided with a station for you to practice as a MO. Well all the elite ranks get the stations that they wish for. But when it comes to the lower ranks like below 900th rank you don't necessarily get what you wish for but rather you'll be appointed in stations where all the elite ranks have refused.
So what's the big deal here and what kind of stations are left for the lower ranks?

Stations which are left out are most definitely way far from Capital Colombo. Not 100 km's but 200 or more km's from Colombo.

Almost all North & East appointments are like that. Apart from them there are none North & East appointments. Examples: like  distant villages bordering cities like Anuradhapura & Polonnaruwa.

So choice is ultimately yours on the personal preferences. However there is a catch to non- North East post intern appointments. Those who get Non-North East post intern appointments have to serve that station for 2 years on a stretch for them to be eligible for a transfer.
But North & East post intern appointments enjoy a special privilege. They are entitled to a transfer after an active one year service.

This blog is written with the intention of providing comprehensive information on as much as North & East stations possible for a new comer to make informed decisions to select his/her station.

I myself is not a Doctor but an engineer. When my wife applied for her post intern appointment it was a really hectic task finding out the details of the stations. I hope that this blog will help all of you to make informed decisions.
